Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Vaginal Bleeding While On Hormone Replacement Therapy?
I am 60 years old and on hormone replacement therapy. In the last year I started having break though bleeding. I had a procedure done to check for cancer I believe. Sorry I can't remember the name of the procedure. It was done in May of this year. I had several polyps removed. All benign. Now my PA is having me meet with the Gynocologist for a possible Endometrial ablation. I just read on the WMD that if you are post menopausal , you should not have this done. Since I am 60 should I not onside this and why?
The cause for bleeding may be due to thinning of the tissue lining the vagina and uterus due to a decrease in estrogen, uterine polyps, Infections of the uterus such as endometritis and cervicitis, abnormal growth of the lining of the uterus (endometrial hyperplasia), and endometrial cancer.
So, you need ultrasound abdomen and to the endometrial lining thickness, If it is more than>11mm risk of endometrial cancer high. Do not go for ablation as it may not cause much problems.
If benefits outweigh risks, then your doctor decide correct treatment for you. Please consult your doctor, she will examine and treat you accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
