What Causes Unusual Taste In Mouth, cough And Burning Sensation In Lungs?

Hi,I recently had went through an intense crossfit routine, in which I pushed my body beyond it s normal use. Afterwards I had a metallic taste in my mouth, and a burning in my lungs. The burning went away quickly, but I developed a cough, and with that cough a I felt like there was mucus in my chest, similar to a chest cold. I also had slight wheezing hours after my workout. Now the wheezing, congestion, and cough has gone away within 1.5 days. The metallic taste still remains when I cough. I went to my doctor today and he stated that this is most likely from heavy exercise and my history of allergies brought on an asthma type reaction. That makes sense as my heart rate was maxed for the full 15 minutes of our exercise. Just wanted to get your thoughts. Thanks!

Hi,

The symptoms you have described, including a metallic taste in the mouth, cough, and burning sensation in the lungs, are consistent with exercise-induced asthma, which can be triggered by heavy exercise or physical exertion. This occurs when the airways in the lungs become inflamed and narrow, making it difficult to breathe and leading to symptoms such as coughing and wheezing.

It is also possible that your symptoms could be related to an underlying respiratory infection or allergy, which can make the airways more susceptible to inflammation and narrowing.

It is important to follow up with your healthcare provider if your symptoms persist or worsen, as they may recommend further testing or treatment to manage your symptoms. In the meantime, it is recommended to avoid activities that may trigger your symptoms, such as heavy exercise or exposure to allergens. If you do engage in physical activity, warm up slowly and use a rescue inhaler if prescribed by your doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
