What Causes Unilateral Pain Under The Rib Cage Radiating To The Back?

I have sharp pain in right side. Under ribs but above hip/pelvis bone. Radiates to right back. The pain was worse when lying on right side than on left. Discomfort early in the day, felt like a fist in my upper stomach/diaphragm. Pain moved to as described above. I did chew 2/3 Alka Seltzer tabs about an hour ago. Pain is not as bad now.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Given the location and characteristics of the pain, it is most concerning for possible gallbladder issues like gallstones, infection, etc. Other possibilities like kidney stones, gas pains should also be ruled out. It is difficult to give you a definite answer without a detailed evaluation.

So please be advised to follow up with the urgent care. Detailed history, physical examination, and even an abdominal ultrasound may be needed at this point.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Lekshmi Rita Venugopal,
