What Causes Tooth Sensitivity?

I have not been brushing my teeth as well as I should. I'm 27. I have only had 3 cavities in my entire life, no gingivitis, plus I can only afford annual dental visits at this point, but my x-rays keep coming back solid, they say my plaque is nothing to worry about, and the dentist always says that my teeth are strong. I do have rare episodes of sensitivity in my molars. Meanwhile, a friend of mine, not as well off as me brushes more than I do, and his teeth are..... well, terrible. Why is this? Genetics???

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern..

As per your complain sensitivity in molars can be due to DENTINAL HYPERSENSITIVITY which can occur either due to receding gums caused by gum disease or chronic vigorous tooth-brushing habit leading to root surface exposure and opening of nerves leading to sensitivity..
Other causes can be loss of enamel due to acid erosion caused due to acid reflux, excess intake of acidic foods and drinks etc..
Tooth picking habit at times in a specified area causes sensitivity..

Nothing to worry as if after dental check-up there are no signs of gum disease or anything else you can start using a desensitizing toothpaste twice a day.
Apply it over teeth and leave for a few seconds and then brush with it.
Do it for 15 days and then continue with your regular toothpaste..

In case if it does not resolve consult a Periodontist and get evaluated..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
