What Causes Tonsillitis Along With Cough And Breathing Difficulty?

I had just gotten over a tonsillitis-like sickness, and my throat feels fine. Now, however, I seem to start coughing and I cannot stop. My throat gets raw and I cannot breathe most of the time. I had pneumonia when I was 5, could the coughing just be from that, or the sickness I had gotten over?
