Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a 2 year old who is out of sorts, sweating a bit at night, a bit more tired during the day and has also had slight cramps and her stool is a light green yellowish..colour and a little runny! We were away and she was on an antibotic for a chesty cough, but she s off that two weeks and over the cough. To be honest, I also have had cramps and a bit of diarroea also. Its just the colour of the stool concerns me. Thanks

Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Malik's Response
Hello and welcome,
Stool color comes from the bile. Bile in the gut converted into a brown pigment called stercobilin by the intestinal bacterial flora. Stercobilin gives brown color to the stool. If the food mixed with bile passes the gut fast enough (diarrheas) it may not be converted into brown pigment and the stool looks green. It is probably the antibiotic that your child is taking caused imbalance in the gut bacterial flora. The antibiotic decreased the bacteria which converts bile into stercobilin (brown pigment). She has mild diarrhea, and after the antibiotic course the diarrhea should also resolve within few days.
I hope the above information will be helpful for you. Please, feel free to ask me if there is anything else you need to know.
Thank you, Malik Amonov MD
