What Causes Tingling Sensation In Left Arm While Climbing Steep Area?

I am pretty good shape, although pretty big for my height. I walk 10 km or more a day.I am 54, 225, 6 . The only problem is climbing a steep hill or stairs. After about three or four flights, I get a tingling in my left arm - it feels like minor numbness. I have had this for a couple of years. Will exercise help this, or is it dangerous to exercise to the point where the arm tingles?

Hi,

The tingling sensation in your left arm while climbing a steep hill or stairs could be caused by a condition called angina pectoris, which is a symptom of coronary artery disease. It occurs when the heart muscle doesn't get enough oxygen-rich blood due to narrowed or blocked coronary arteries. When you exercise, your heart requires more oxygen-rich blood, which may cause symptoms such as chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, and arm tingling or numbness.

However, there could be other causes of the tingling sensation, such as a pinched nerve in the neck or shoulder, or a circulation problem. It is important to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

In general, regular exercise can help improve your overall cardiovascular health and reduce the risk of heart disease. However, it is important to start gradually and increase intensity and duration gradually to avoid overexertion and potential harm. If you experience any symptoms during exercise, such as chest pain or arm tingling, you should stop and seek medical attention.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

The tingling sensation you are experiencing in your left arm while climbing a steep hill or stairs could be caused by a variety of factors, including nerve compression, poor circulation, or muscle strain. Nerve compression can occur when nerve roots in the neck become compressed, leading to symptoms such as tingling or numbness in the arm or hand. Poor circulation can also cause tingling or numbness in the extremities, especially during exercise or physical activity.

It is important to discuss these symptoms with a healthcare provider, who can perform a physical exam and order tests to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. Depending on the cause, treatment options may include medication, physical therapy, or lifestyle changes. It is generally safe to exercise, but it is important to listen to your body and not push yourself beyond your limits. If you experience severe or persistent symptoms during exercise, it is important to stop and rest, and seek medical attention if necessary.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
