Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have had this tickle in my throat for two weeks now. I cough so much. All during the day. Sometimes when I cough a tiny bit of mucus will come up. I have a partial stopped up nose at times, but feel fine. This coughing is so annoying and my sleep is being affected. I have taken prescription cough meds and over the counter ones. I am taking OTC meds now.
Thanks for your query . The most probable reason for your symptoms is GERD (gastrointestinal reflux disease) or acid reflux. This occur due to dysfunction of upper sphincter of esophagus as it let the acid content of stomach to come into esophagus upto throat .
This causes irritation or rashes in throat and dry cough .Life style changes and some medications will reverse the situation.
I would suggest you to eat light and non spicy food , take small meals after every 2 hours , do not eat late night , take you food at least 1 hour before going to sleep.
Consult gastroentrologist for proper examination . Doctor may order ambulatory acid prob test , X-ray of digestive system and endoscopy. He/she may prescribe proton pump inhibitor (omeprazole) , H2 blocker to prevent production of acid (ranitidine) , antacid (maalox).
Hope your concern has been resolved.
