What Causes Throbbing Pain In The Foot And Shin?

My son who is 34 years old is complaining of throbbing pain in his right foot and shin. there is a lot of discoloration (it looks like a cross between a rash and a bruise). it is hot to the touch well real warm anyways to the touch. I don t see broken skin but the skin is hard to tell if skin is broken or not with the discoloring. very painful and hard to walk on. says it throbs with pain and seem to feel better when elevated. tried to get him to go to emergency room. he wants me to check with internet first. What could this be and what should we do?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Could be many things, e.g. cellulitis, fasciitis, deep venous thrombosis. He should definitely go to the emergency department to be safe.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Anders Mark Christensen, General Surgeon
