What causes throat spasms?

I have occasional episodes of laryngeal spasms and need oral surgery. It is difficult for me to lie flat on my back for any length of time and I am concerned about either a spasm during the surgery or trouble breathing because of the tight throat muscles. I am Female, 91 years old and in good general health.
