What Causes The Worms To Develop In The Gums?

Hi, I found something on the internet recently showing worms in the gums of several different persons, one of them being an 8 year old child. I am totally disgusted and unable to believe this. Is there a biological cause for this? And how on earth does something like this happens? Thanks

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

Well, worms in the gums is a very rare condition known as Gingival Myiasis that causes growth of maggots in the gums and other parts of oral cavity but is a very rare condition and is seen in case if there is very poor oral hygiene and also the individual is having any debilitating condition and the individual is a mouth breather..
If the patient has compromised immunity then such maggots grow without any resistance and penetrate to deeper tissues and then lead to further production or larvae..
In my medical career I have handled such a case twice in which patient had maggots coming out of mouth which we removed by using irritants like turpentine oil.
But as it is rare, you need not to worry about it it you maintain a good oral hygiene and are healthy..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
