Hi, im 21 and for the past few weeks ive been having trouble falling asleep due to a constant need to swallow. It feels as if there is a lump in the back of my throat that i need to swallow but just can't . Do you have any suggestion and/or concerns about this?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have lump at the back of the throat which could be due to acid reflux from stomach leading to excessive production of bile and might be due to throat infection caused by bacteria or viruses. It could be due to tonsillitis.

Need not to worry. I would suggest you to suck sugar free candy and keep yourself hydrate. Avoid oily and fried food. You should consult ENT specialist for proper checkup. Doctor may order test like throat swab test and blood tests. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics like penicillin along with decongestant and anti inflammatory medications. In case of acid reflux proton pump inhibitors like Pantoprazole could be relieving. For now do warm saline gargles and take steam twice a day.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
