What Causes The Helix On Left Ear To Be Red Swollen And Oozing Pus?

My son's helix on his left ear is red and has puss coming out of it. It's getting crusty. He is on swim team and swims every day. He also is in a golf camp and is out in the sun most of the day. What could the problem be? The crest of helix (I think that is right) is also a little swollen and red.

Otolaryngologist/ENT Doctor 's  Response
Hi,

The brief clinical history that you provided suggests that your son could be suffering from an infection of the external part of the ear which is most often caused by bacteria. Once the external ear is cleansed, application of an antibacterial agent at the affected region for a week could be helpful. I recommend that your son should avoid swimming for atleast a week.
Please consult your ENT doctor and follow his/her advise.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr. Prasad
