What Causes The Heart To Stop Beating During A Surgery?

I recently had a total hip replacement. The next morning I woke to a room full of hospital staff calling me back. My doctor was there and massaged my sternum. Several years ago I had an appendectomy and quit breathing on the operating table. There appeared to be no other issues in both cases. What happened? Could it happen again? A surgical nurse said that sometimes the heart stops momentarily. Is there a name and description and prognosis for this? Katherine Wallenhaupt
