What Causes The Habit Of Stealing When Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder And Depression?

My son is 23 years old. He has been charged twice for felony theft. Both times he stole from family members. The first time I can remember him stealing anything was around the age of 14..and that was from his sister. He has been diagnosed bipolar, major depression, etc. but I cannot help but feel that the doctors are missing something. Do you have any insight?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear user,

I really understand your concern.

Based on you introduction, this is called kleptomania - a disorder of impulse control characterized by a morbid tendency to steal items generally don't really need and that usually have little value.

People with kleptomania often have another mental illness, such as bipolar disorders etc.

Cognitive behavioral therapy may helps him identify unhealthy, negative beliefs and behaviors and replace them with healthy, positive ones.

All the best!
