What Causes Tenderness In The Leg Upon Intake Of Methotrexate?

Hi Dr. Rynne. My husband is taking 40 mg prednisone daily and 10 mg methotrexate once per week. The day following his taking methotrexate, he has developed pronounced leg tenderness. I barely touched his leg and he nearly hit the ceiling in pain. There doesn t appear to be any leg swelling (right leg), but it is firmer than usual. What s going on and what should we do next?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The leg pain is more likely related to rheumatoid arthritis. This diagnosis can give inflammation and pain of the joints and extremities. I suggest you to use an anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen three times a day for the pain. He can also use anti-inflammatory creams for local application.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi,
