What Causes Tender Lump Above Scar Caused By Mastectomy?
I had a double mastectomy back in November 2014. I have noticed that I Have a raised lump in my chest about an inch above my scar . The skin is slightly pink in color and the lump is tender to the touch. Is this a concern for me or is it normal after having breast surgery? Thanks Ruth Davies.
Hello and welcome to HCM, Appearance of any lump above the scar after breast surgery is of concern. The new lump formed above the scar can be due to recurrence of breast cancer in the scar. Thus, I suggest you to consult your treating surgeon without delay. An aspiration cytology of the lump is required to examine the cells in the lump. Aspiration cytology consists of aspiration of cells with the help of needle, spreading n glass slide and staining with appropriate stains. The stained cells are examined microscopically to assess the nature of the cells. In case there is recurrence of cancer, appropriate treatment usually in the form of radiotherapy has to be given.
