What Causes Tearing Of Heart Lining Due To Plaque Buildup Leading To Death?

My brother in law died (46 years old with no previous medical issues) of what they say was a tearing of his heart lining caused by a severe cholesterol plaque build up. My sister was too upset to get the name of the disease but the coroner said it is hereditary and I m trying to find the medical term so I can begin researching the disease for my sister and of course, I m concerned about my nephew too. I imagine I can wait until we get the death certificate, but who knows how long that will take. Any ideas on where I might look to find the name of the condition represented by the coroner s findings I stated above?

Hello
Welcome to HCM
Thanks for posting your query. I understand your concerns. Tearing of heart lining is medically termed as aortic dissection. It's not lining of heart but it's the lining of aorta also called as endothelium that breaks.

Aorta is the major vessel arising from left ventricle. Due to high cholesterol levels lipid plaque will build up in the vessel that will lead to dissection.

It is a life threatening condition, with very high mortality rate.

Check your nephew lipid profile.

Hope you are happy with the answer.

Thank you
