What Causes Tearing And Burning Sensation In Eye Along With Swollen Eyelid?

My left eye has been tearing and burning almost constantly for five days. Two days ago, I woke up with what seems to be a cyst on the inner corner (caruncle?). It s small but definitely some sort of growth or inflammation I ve never had before. My lower eyelid is swollen too. When I woke this morning there was a very thick clear/whitish film/gunk seemingly coming out of my lower lacrimal punctum and sticking to the caruncle. Almost like a protective layer. My inner eye and lower eye area and as of today the left side of my nose is all very sore to touch. What might this be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Tearing and burning sensation in the eye along with swollen eyelid, is indicative of stye in the inner corner of the eye. However, other medical conditions that may cause similar symptoms are chalazion, blepharitis, etc. Keep your eyes clean, apply warm compress and clean the eyes and lacrimal secretions carefully with clean hands. Do not pop, touch or squeeze the pus from the stye. Avoid wearing lens, give rest to your eyes. Do not apply any make up.

Get it clinically examined by an eye specialist to confirm if its stye, chalazion, pinguecula, etc. He may give you antibiotic eye drops, Genticyn eye drops to apply 2-3 drops, 3-4 times a day. For relieve from pain and swelling you can take acetaminophen, one SOS when required. You will be given conservative treatment or may be recommended minor surgical procedure if need be.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
