What Causes Swollen Veins In Arms And Leg?

I woke up to go to the bathroom at 4:30 am and I noticed the veins in my arms (both), they were expanded and I could see them clearly. I am 65 years old and active, but this frightened me... even could see s vein in my right leg... What is this? It went away, but the thought of it made me wonder...
