Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Swollen Legs And Chest Congestion After Excessive Alcohol Consumption?
My husband is having a problem with retaining fluid, especially in his legs. He is 66 years old . He is a heavy drinker who just quit drinking about 3 weeks ago. I am concerned because he has also developed a chest cold and is having problems getting rid of the phlegm in his chest. He has been drinking a lot of water and taking vitamins. I am concerned that his body is not recovering from the quitting of the alcohol. He has gone on the wagon in the past and usually after a few weeks he seems fine but not this time.
Swelling in legs can be caused due to cardiovascular or renal disease.
I suggest you consult a cardiologist for swelling in legs. Inability to clear sputum from chest also needs to be addressed simultaneously. I suggest you consult a pulmonologist also at the same time.
Decongestants and bronchodilators may be required to get rid of the sputum. Antibiotics may also be required if there is a concurrent infection.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Shailja Puri,
Pathologist and Microbiologist
