What Causes Swollen Finger?

Hi, I was playing basketball yesterday and had a great game. Unforutunately when I got home I notice my middle finger was stiff, I didn t think that it was serious until this morning when I saw it was swollen and mildly stiff. I didn t notice anything during the game, how could this have happened? And what is it?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear, thanks for the question.

You have injured your finger while playing. During the actual game it goes unnoticed (you had great game). Swelling can be due to ligament tear, muscle tear or fracture of phalanges (finger bone) in worst case. However in case of fracture swelling is huge, sudden and extremely painful.

You need to visit an orthopaedic doctor for assessment and treatment. Meanwhile you must immobilise your finger by finger splint (support) and take pain killer like TRAMADOL for symptomatic relief.

I wish you rapid recovery.
