What Causes Swishing Sound In Carotid Artery?

My doctor hear a swishing sound in cartoid artery when I went in for my physical. She sent me for a cartoid doppler, the results of which read normal but her diagnosis was cartoid bruit; but no further action was recommended. I m confused by the diagnosis in my medical record when test results were normal.

Hi..
Carotid bruit is a physical finding your doctor hear in carotid area with steth .It is caused by turbulent blood flow across a stenosed (narrowed) carotid artery or in persons with aortic valvular stenosis. Whenever you hear this bruit,it is not confirmatory..Because many people tend to have innocent bruit, which means it is NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ANY ORGANIC DISEASE.
In your case the doctor sent you for doppler(it actually tells you how healthy your arteries are and your blood flow in it) to rule out any organic disease..It would have turned out normal!!!.
Yes,you can have a bruit with no disease.
But you didnt furnish me any details whether you did ECG or an echo.Because doppler examines your vessels not your heart and its valves..So I would recommend you to consider taking an ecg and/or an echo if you have any of the following symptoms:
1.frequent black outs(particulary during increased physical activity)
2.difficulty breathing
3.palpitations
4.chest pain(during increased physical activity)
RISK FACTORS
1.old age
2.obesity and high fat levels
3.history of rheumatic fever in the past.
hope that helps...!
