What causes swelling, redness and pain in the toes?

My toe is super swollen and bright red, the skin is very far grown over my nail and i can’t touch anything on the whole toe. It has liquid coming out of it and it smells super bad. I can barely walk from it and i am getting sharp pains up my foot and leg. What should i do?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your symptoms seem to be related to an infection.
Some advice that I can give to you are:
-clean and dry the area frequently
-Soak the toe for about 15 minutes in a bathtub or bucket filled with warm water and salt.
-Rub an antibiotic ointment on the toe and wrap it in a clean bandage.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Greetings, I am 71 years old, 5 10 , 202 #, Normal heart rate, BP, lab results (in August), no cancer, no heart disease, no diabetes, generally in good health. I have developed a 10 day issue of a painful left big toe, actually more stinging than pain; no swelling/redness. No hx of injury. Hurts when I apply minimal pressure. Any thoughts??? Thank you

I have pain in my right big toe. Only when I stretch it or it gets bumped or touched. it is not swollen/red and i have not had any injuries to my foot? I am in great pain if I bump it though, also does not hurt to walk or run and if you look and it compared to my other foot there is no difference??:?

I have intermittent pain in both big toes. Feels like needles when it hurts. Haven t hurt my feet. The nails both have a dark spot on them. As the nails have been growing I cut them back, but the nail stays unattached to the underlying skin and the darker part hasn t gone away. This has been going on for about 8 months,
