Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Swelling Throughout The Body In A Patient Suffering From Collapsed Esophagus?
My friend had 3 episodes of collapsed esophagus. She is unable to eat or drink. Her doctors do not have her in the hospital to supplement nutrients and hydration. She has been like this for approximately 4 weeks. Her lymphatic system now seems to be shutting down. She is swollen from head to toe like a severe case of lymphedema. Would you recommend that she be hospitalized and have an abdominal feeding tube put in place to receive nutrition and have an IV put in for hydration? thanks!
* As per my clinical experience, there can be various reasons for swelling whole body in a patient suffering from collapsed esophagus as low protein levels, septicemia, fluid retention, generalised anasarca of inflammatory response or others.
* If the patient is unable to eat or drink by mouth, she must be supplemented with intravenous central line catheter with or without Ryle`s tube for best possible systemic support and care.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
