What Causes Swelling On The Lips And Vomiting After Taking Clindamycin?

My daughter was seen in the ER yesterday for abscess tooth and prescribed Clindamycin. Today the swelling has doubled and spread have way across her lip. She has also started vomiting this afternoon. Should we seek emergency treatment, we just aren't sure if the increase of swelling is from the abscess or Clindamycin.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

It looks like the swelling is from abscess only and many a times when the infection is severe then just a single dose of the antibiotic is not able to reduce swelling and infection..
Vomiting can however be a gastric side effect of clindamycin as antibiotics are commonly seen to cause gastric upset which can cause nausea and vomiting..
As the swelling has doubled you should not delay and immediately consult an Emergency Dentist..
Many a times Incision and Drainage can be done to remove pus so that the swelling can be reduced considerably and then it can be followed by antibiotics and painkillers.
Once the infection considerably reduces then the tooth in question will be either root canal treated or removed.
Do not delay as the infection can progress in soft tissues and cause cellulitis and space infections..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
