What Causes Swelling On Leg?

I hit the top of my leg real hard I thought it was just my muscle that was swelling. It had a little knot but the muscle its self is very hard. not as swollen as at first but has been 4 days. its hurts to squat . blood did collect around my knee. I have put cold then hot compresses. Do you think it could be a broke leg or could it be I hurt my muscle that badly. It does not hurt as bad as it did but if I put any real pressure on it it will swell back up quickly

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
I have studied your case and i think you might have hair line fracture in the toe. I would suggest you to get X ray of the foot to confirm the diagnosis. If there is fracture than you will need splinting.
Even if there is no fracture than also it is better to splint the limb because rest will allow quick healing.
You should also not hang your leg on one side of the bed and keep it elevated over pillow. Tablet Brufen one tab twice daily is useful.
Let me know if you want to ask any other follow up questions.
Thanks
