What Causes Swelling Of Stomach And Difficulty In Passing Bowel Movements?

My father is in the hospital right now. He was on iv for about half a day and his stomach is so swollen that he cant eat or drink because its getting too hard. And going to the bathroom has been difficult for him. What can be wrong? The doctors wont be testing him until tommorrow.
