What Causes Swelling In The Penis?

I have had a firm swelling at the base of my penis for several weeks. It can feel tender from time to time & cause some discomfort during an erection. It feels like a natural part of the penis, so it is sometimes difficult to see this as a new event . However, I am sure this is not natural & it is starting to worry me now. please can you explain what it might be & advise me what to do next. Many thanks.

Hi, thanks for using Healthcare Magic.

I understand your concern, but you should not worry that much. The cause of the complaints you are experiencing is often associated with infection, the causes include:
1. Balanitis, swelling of the gland penis
2. Posthitis, swelling in the foreskin or prepuce of the penis
3. Phymosis and paraphymosis are common in young children who are not circumcised
4. Urinary tract infection
5. Sexually transmitted disease
6. Trauma or injury to the penis

It is difficult to ascertain the cause of the complaints you feel, without direct examination. Therefore, do not delay to go to a dermatologist. Provision of drugs such as painkiller, corticosteroids, or antibiotics when the cause of bacteria, will be considered by the doctors according to the results of the examination and your condition later.

Here are some tips that can be done to help to reduce complaints, among others:
1. Get enough rest, and eat nutritious food
2. Consumption of lots of water, at least 2 liters per day
3. Wash hands before and after holding the genitals
4. Do not have sexual intercourse alternating couple
5. Have sexual intercourse with condom
6. Do not have oral sex or anal sex
7. Follow the advice of your treating doctor
