Hi,I am Dr. Gopal Goel (Orthopaedic Surgeon). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My lower legs, ankles and feet swell. I am 81 yrs old. I spent a goodly amount of time sitting at a computer. Or sitting reading. I try to exercise at the Y on a walking machine for 20 minutes at least 3 times a week. I also peddle on the stationary bike for 5 to 15 minutes on the same days I go to the Y. I ve noticed that when my legs are swollen I awake at night some times as many as 5 or 6 times to urinate. Then in the morning the legs and ankles are closer to normal. I have had open heart surgery to by-pass an aneurysm o my aorta. 12 years ago and a AAA to fix an aneurysm about 4 years ago. I am trying to figure out what I should do to reduce the leg swelling issue.
At your age, the swelling can be due to a cardiac or a renal cause or due to use of laxatives or excessive salt intake. A detailed evaluation is needed to find the cause.
