General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

There are different causes for swelling of the lower limbs.

The most common reasons are:
(1) heart disease such as heart failure- this can happen in some persons with a history of high blood pressure if it is not controlled
An echo can determine if the heart is not working as it should
(2) liver disease- blood tests, liver function tests, can determine if there is an issue here
(3) kidney disease
Blood tests and urine tests can assess the kidneys
(4) arthritis or any other structure changes
(5) venous disease
(6) a side effect of medication- the blood pressure medication, amlodipine, cause swelling to occur.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
