What Causes Swelling In The Left Ankle After A Surgery?

I had ORIF surgery for trimalleolar fracture of my left ankle on 1/7/16. I am 46 year old female, 5 ft 1 in and weigh about 150 lbs. I am currently suffering pain and minor swelling on the outside of my left ankle, where the plate was placed (I have a plate with 6 screws on fibula and 3 big screws in tibia). Is this normal?
