General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Swelling in the legs, hips and toes in a prostrate cancer patient is due to the failure of the lymphatic system to function normally thus causing edema. Swelling is also caused due to leaking fluid from the blood vessels or when the body is producing more fluid than the body can remove it.

Swelling is commonly aggravated by side effects of certain medicines (methyprednisolone, hydrocortisone, etc) and poor nutrition. Your treating doctor will give you diuretics for relieve. Restrict salt intake in your diet, lymphatic drainage massage is effective. Wear elastic compression stockings & do regular walking.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
