What Causes Swelling Behind The Knees?

Hello! Healthy, 53 year old female. Behind both knees, back of leg are puffy and swollen, not quite the size of tennis ball, maybe half size of tennis ball, stiffness with mild pain. I went to wedding, flew on plane yesterday and again today. Just wondering if it all goes together?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
It sounds like you may have developed Baker's cysts. This is when some of the fluid from the knee joint leaks out behind the knees and causes a cyst. It is not harmful but if it is painful they can sometimes be drained. These cysts usually resolve on their own but if it is particularly painful you may want to see an orthopedist to verify the diagnosis and to get treatment suggestions.
