What Causes Swelling At The Base Of The Tongue With Difficulty In Swallowing?

I have had a severe sore throat for 10-14 days, saw a physician, had a negative strep test and was given Magic Mouthwash. I am still having a sore throat but it's very deep, kind of under my tongue and the base of my tongue is swollen. It's hard to sleep and very sore to swallow. Seems to be worse at night. Thoughts are - sinus drainage causing it???

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..
I have gone through your query in detail and can very well understand your health concerns..

As you have a sore throat which can be commonly due to bacterial infection (strep throat) but as you are tested negative for it,the sore throat can be due to viral infection but as it is progressive for more than two weeks there are chances that you had a viral infection but now it is secondarily infected by bacteria and there is continuation of the sore throat..

The swelling at the base of tongue is also as a result of infection..

You should take Augmentin 625mg twice daily.
For pain take Advil or tylenol twice daily.
Take Pantoprazole 40mg one capsule in the morning empty stomach..
Chewable Vitamin C tablets can be relieving..
Sucking throat lozenges like vicks cough drops can be soothening..
Do warm saline gargles three times a day..

Hope this information helps and thanks for writing to Healthcare Magic..
