What Causes Swelling Around The Index Finger Joint?

Within the last week each morning when I wake up my left hand is swollen especially around the joint on my index finger. It is so painful I have trouble writing (I m left handed). I also notice I have a little pain in my right hand, but it goes away pretty quickly. The pain and swelling in my left hand gets better during the day but is still a problem when I go to bed (then much worse again in the morning). I recently changed two prescriptions...I went from taking Simvastain to 10 mg Prendastatin (sp?) each night (it s a different cholestohol. I thought this might be the cause so I quit taking the Predestatin for 5-days but symptons didn t change. I also am diabetic and my Dr. precscribed that I take an extra 4 mg of Glimepiride at night in addition to the 4 mg I take during the day. I wonder if this is causing the sudden hand swelling?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The commonest cause I can think about such a painful swelling of the joint of finger with edema around as follows:
Arthritis of the affected joint.
Synovitis.
Rheumatoid arthritis.
All this can be added on due to diabetes and increase of dose of Glimepiride by your Doctor indicates that diabetes is not under control.
I would further advise you the following:
Get the relevant blood tests and X-rays of the affected area.
Consult an Orthopedic Surgeon for clinical evaluation and any further investigations to get the proper diagnosis.
Steroids should be avoided as it can increase your diabetes.
Anti-inflammatory medications with painkiller properties will surely help to get well.
Warm hypertonic saline bath should help further.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant,
