What Causes Swelling And Pain In The Ankle After A Surgery ?

Hello, I broke my left ankle on 6/6/13, I broke the small outside bone and shredded the ligaments. I had surgery on 6/28/13. I was non weight bearing until september 20th, then I started walking in a walking boot. I started physical therapy in december and went for 5 weeks. Everything was looking good at that point. In the last 15 days I have had massive swelling of that ankle and severe pain. I finally broke down and went to the er to make sure all the hardware was still in place. During the procedure I had a plate and 5 small screws placed and a larger screw was placed thru both bones to hold everything together. I am curious as to why I am now having problems. I am diabetic and do also smoke. My blood sugar runs in the 200's. The incision did get infected post surgery but was just the skin, nothing deep was treated with topical antibiotic cream. What could possible be causing the swelling and pain now? I assume its a ligament or tendon issue?
Thank you

HI
Thank for asking to HCM
I can appreciate your concern there are many reason for this swelling,, as long as the surgical procedure is concern this could be the first possibility and this needs to be ruled out, and for that you have to talk to the surgeon who did the surgery meanwhile you can take the following medicine to reduce the swelling,
1) Tab. Ibuprofen 400 mg three times in day with Acetaminophen this will reduce the swelling, I hope this information helps you, take care and have nice day.
