What Causes Swelling And Joint Pain?

My 40 yr. old son-in-law has swelling and joint pain in both elbows and knees. He has seen his primary care physician, an orthopedic physician, and an arthritis specialist. His knees have been drained several times and this provides immediate relief; within two weeks the swelling in his knees returns and he is in pain that renders him immobile. He has had blood work done to test uric acid levels and is currently taking a medication prescribed by the arthritis specialist. The arthritis specialist is 70% sure he has pseudo gout; but the medication hasn t made any difference and the right knee that was drained two weeks ago is swollen and painful once again.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I would advise your son to do a renal function test and also 2 D echocardiography.
If his uric acid level is high then he needs to take Febuxostat group of drugs.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
