What Causes Swelling And Inflammation On The Lower Legs?

I was hospitalized for 9 days with cellulitis of lower leg. I was given IV antibiotics and then antibiotics at home for 2 weeks. I ve been off antibiotics for a week now and still have swelling and redness/purple from calf down to foot. I elevate daily and have been exercising via yoga and ankle pumps and lymphedema exercises but it hasn t gone down. Not sure what to do!

Dear friend. I have gone through your question. .
It would have been better if you have mentioned your diabetic status.
In the event of cellulitis with swelling and redness, the triggering factor for the present scenario needs to be investigated.
Cellulitis episodes are more common in diabetic people. So it will be good for you to check your blood sugars.
Other causes can be a venous thrombosis, venous insufficiency, trauma to legs following long treks.
My advice to you is to get a venous Doppler done for your limb and assess the veins.
If there is a history of trekking or trauma to leg before the present episode, it will take atleast 6 weeks for the swelling to subside.
If unilateral odema continues you can get an ultrasound abdomen done to rule out any intraabdominal masses.
Strict glycemic control (in case if diabetic), proper antibiotic coverage, good hygeine of limb, rest, keep limb in elevated position, you can apply ice bags over the limb to reduce swelling. Compression bandages will also help.
Consult a surgeon if the swelling does not subside.
I find this answer helpful
