What Causes Swelling And Discoloration In The Legs After An Injury?

My eight year old grandson fell getting out of the tub and hit his leg really hard. It immediately turned black and blue and swelled up. we put ice on it and elevated his leg and it went down. But now that he is walking it has swelled back up and hurts when he walks or touches it. Should we take him to the er?

With that amount of bruising and the pain he needs to see a doctor for an exam and to see if x-rays are warranted to rule out a fracture
