What Causes Swelling And Discoloration In The Forearm?

I am a 59 years old female with a broken upper left arm (humurus). I ve been in a brace for about 5 days now. I am taking medication to control the pain. I understand there will be some swelling + bruising of the arm, but the swelling extends to the tips of my fingers - the entire forearm is swollen with a somewhat redish/blue discoloration. How normal is this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The extended swelling and the blue discoloration is not normal. The tissue is not supplied by oxygen and that is why it turns in blue color. I suggest you to consult an orthopedist as soon as possible for further evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
