What Causes Swelling And Bruising In The Ankle?

Hi, I was kicked on the medial side of my shin last Tuesday. I expected there to be a big bruise but nothing really appeared until this Sunday. At the point of impact I have a greenish bruise and it feels like there is a lot of pressure underneath. There is limited sensation when I run my fingers over the bruise and slight pain when I press on it. The medial side of my ankle has been swollen for a few days and there is dark purple bruising just inferior to my medial malleolus with no pain when I press on it. I am slightly concerned about compartment syndrome but range of motion has not been affected. Is it possible the blood is just draining down to my foot?

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hi. Welcome to healhcaremagic. After going through your query I concluded that you may be having hematoma on medial aspect of shin and ankle. It's not compartment syndrome.Donot worry much. Hematoma is subcutaneous collection of blood, also called bruise. It shift to lower part due to gravity. Hematoma gradually changes colour. It will resolve gradually. You can apply thrombophobe gel three times a day without rubbing it. For pain you can take analgesic such as ibuprofen.Vitamin B and C is helpful in recovery. You can discuss about it with your doctor. Hope your query get answered. If you have additional questions and clarification then please don't hesitate to write to us. I will be happy to answer your query. Wishing you good health. Take care.
