What Causes Swallowing Difficulty, Heartburn And Hiccups?

Lately i developed a problem swallowing food. Especially it happens if I take a chunk of anything without liquid. I also started getting heartburns which I never had before except when I was pregant 33 years ago. I am 58 year old female. Is it anything serious? I also started getting hiccups if I take food without liquid. It goes away as soon as I drink something. thank you

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi

Acid reflux can cause difficulty in swallowing, bitter taste and heart burn.Proton pump inhibitors used before food can relieve the symptoms.

Healthy diet and avoiding sleeping immediately aftermeals can reduce the symptoms.

Obstructive pathology is typically associated with dysphagia of solid food but not liquids.Any growth should be ruled out in the esophagus.
Peptic stricture or lower esophageal ring should also be ruled out.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards
