What Causes Sudden Rise In The PSA Level Post A Prostatectomy?

I had Prostate removal surgery in 2004. Recently, the PSA which was increasing very slowly up to 2.01 made a jump to 3.05. Earlier my pre-surgery Gleason score was 7.0. After reviewing this process I am only now beginning the research. So.. Thanks for now

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Suggestive of cancer recurrence.

Following prostatectomy) your PSA should be undetectable after about a month. However, about 25-33% of men with prostate cancer will experience a recurrence of their cancer after surgery or radiation.

A PSA level of more than 0.2 ng/mL that is elevated on at least two separate occasions at least two weeks apart and measured by the same lab is highly suggestive of cancer recurrence.

So, I advise you to consult an oncologist for further evaluation which may need MRI, isotope scans and ultrasound to find out metastases if any.

Your doctor may prescribe hormonal therapy (if you are not taking now) followed by periodic testing for PSA.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
