What Causes Sudden Numbness In The Hand?

My 16 year old sons left arm went completely numb today from the elbow all the way down to his hand. He could not feel anything. He had it resting at the edge of the desk and it fell off. He had to use his other hand to pull it back up. Then it happened again. After about 10 minutes he got the feeling back. Could you please tell me what could of caused this? It has never happened before.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

If this happened just once, and it completely resolved after 10 minutes, I would suspect he was putting pressure on the nerve that goes to the arm by the way he was resting his arm on the edge of the desk.

After putting pressure on the nerve for long enough, the arm can become numb and completely paralyzed, until the nerve recovers after the pressure is relieved.

If it doesn't happen again and his arm is completely fine now, I wouldn't be worried about it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
