What Causes Sudden Loss Of Speech?

My mother has woken up and has found she has lost her voice. This is the 4th time it has happened in about a month or 2. It usually lasts about the whole day and by the time she wakes up the next morning her voice is back. I was wondering if you would know what it is and what could help?

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hello,
Before answering your query I need to age of your mother, does she have any thyroid problem, blood pressure? Does she have breathing difficulty along with voice loss? Is she able to cough during these episodes?
Loss of voice can be swelling of the vocal cords. Causes can be various such as acute infections, allergy, thyroid problems , GERD, vocal cord nodules.
I would suggest her to see an ENT specialist for laryngoscopy to diagnose the cause.
She can take steam inhalation and start proton pump inhibitors such as Omeprazole 20mg twice daily for 5 days.

Please do reply with details.
With regards.
