What Causes Sudden Hearing Loss?

Hi, this does not happen on a regular basis but many times I wake up to newsman/woman talking about news. Usually this happens around 5:00 a.m. and I am lying on my right ear. If I lift my ear from the pillow, I hear nothing. Sometimes the news are so vivid to me that I could almost repeat them verbatim. It is just annoying to me. I have a radio/telephone at my home and thought that I might be being used as an antennae but this also happens when I am away from home. I am interested in news but not at 5:00 am.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Your question is related to hyperacusis that is hearing something very loudly or altered hearing and not hearing loss as you have mentioned in the first line. Well this is happening only with the right ear on pillow and at 5:00 am. This can be just psychological or there can be an actual news going on somewhere else that is picked up by your right ear only when it is in contact with pillow. I would advise you to get the Audiometry and ENT check up and get treated as pr the findings. There looks nothing serious about it but is unusual and worth finding out the cause to eliminate the problem.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,

Dr. T Chandrakant
