What Causes Sudden Cough With Thick Mucus Of Yellowish Tinge?

Hello. My name is Melissa. I am a 55yo woman from California. Recently I have been woken up at night with a horrible choking cough that produces a grainy, mustard colored, awful tasting, thick mucus in fairly large quantities, perhaps 200ml at a time. These episodes happen about 3 weeks apart. I have to admit that I am still smoking but significantly less and am continuing to taper down. I am not being treated for any respiratory condition. This seems different than any smoker s cough I have ever heard of. Do you have any idea what might be going on?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have sudden cough with thick mucus and yellowish tinge which is due to lung infection leading to upper respiratory tract infection or bronchitis. Avoid eating spicy , oily and fried food substances. You should take cough expectorants and antacid after every meal specially at night . You should do warm saline rinses several times a day. I would suggest you to visit pulmonologist once and get it examined. You should get pulmonary function tests and X-ray chest done. You should avoid cold beverages. You should take throat soothing agents such as strepsils. Take combination of antibiotic amoxiclav along with antihistamine such as Levocetirizine. Doctor may also refer you to gastroenterologist for proper diagnosis if he/she find this problem to be related with acid reflux( GERD ). Keep your head elevated while sleeping.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
