What Causes Sudden Choking Sensation In The Throat During Nights?

HELLO, MY HUSBAND AND I ARE 54 AND 52. IN THE LAST YEAR OR SO, WE BOTH HAVE BEEN WOKEN UP CHOKING. THEN COUGHING TO CLEAR IT. WHAT IS CAUSING THIS AND IS THERE A WAY TO STOP IT. ITS NOT EVERY NIGHT. MAYBE EVERY TWO TO THREE NIGHTS A WEEK. ITS EITHER HIM OR ME.
