What Causes Sub Conjunctival Bleeding?

I am a 50 year old woman with thalassemia minor. To this point the only time it had ever been an issue was during pregnancy. However, during the past year, I have had recurrent subconjunctival bleeding (about 40). My opthamologist thinks it might be related to the thalassemia minor, because his wife has it also, and "all kinds of weird things can happen." This does not seem to be a very scientific explanation. Any thoughts?
